What we do

Why Equines?

image362

Horses are naturally social animals with personalities, fears, attitudes and moods. Being prey animals, they depend on communication for safety and are sensitive to the energy around them.  This means they will respond appropriately to human interaction, which allows us to experience a sense of connection and participation without the negative feelings we are often used to.

Horses are herd animals and are very much influenced by the behaviour and body language of those around them.  Equines are generally sensitive and are incapable of lying.  They give immediate feedback and any reactions are unbiased and unconditional.  A horse will accept without judgement and has no concern with weight, appearance, agenda, status or outer body –  A horse is purely interested in our inner story and therefore encourages us to stay in the present moment.

Even though a horse is large, powerful animal, they rely on us to feel safe.  Horses act as an emotional mirror – they sense moods, read body language and are aware of our mind state, often before we know ourselves.  Horses and humans both seek the same feelings of trust and connection, and very quickly a person can realise this, enabling them to form an equal bond that is uplifting and inspiring.

Equine Assisted Learning (EFL)

EFL is fast becoming a popular choice of therapy for children and young adults in the UK.

Based on the concepts that horses are able to teach a person about themselves and spending time with horses can positively influence a person’s life, EFL is delivered through objectively driven exercises in a safe, fun and exciting atmosphere.  Participants find themselves learning valuable life skills and gaining self-confidence, through validated hands-on experiences.

Unlike other forms of traditional therapy, EFL does not require a clinical professional. The professionals are the horses. The participant will be guided by the horse to solve their own problems, whilst building skills to move forward, not only in the session, but in their lives too.

EFL activities are done from the ground and include bonding, herd observation, grooming, leading, hand grazing, general horse care and obstacle courses. Sessions often include activities away from the horses where the participant can reflect. Every session is adapted to the individual needs of the participant and the horse.

Equine Assisted Therapy (EFT)

A kind of magic happens when a child or young adult is brought here to interact with horses.  A change of environment to open, natural surroundings, filled with fresh air and flooded with sunshine, can have an uplifting and calming effect, and with time, they can begin to let go of negative emotions and feelings.

Anyone can participate in EFL, including those with anxiety, depression, where everyday life has become a real struggle.

EFL has proven to increase wellbeing, independence, confidence, resilience, trust, self-awareness and self-control. Over time, relationships will become easier and fears will be overcome.  Physical pain and negative emotions will decrease and enable a person to become more focussed.New skills will be developed to promote independence outside of the sessions.

All of this happens as part of the experience. There is no counselling and the therapy comes from the horses, using their natural ability to connect.
